Bard Attack Roll Spells: What Spell Should You Choose?

Are you prepared for this list? I wasn’t.

If you are a Bard and you’re tired of your DM rolling and making the monster saving throws then what are your attack roll spell options? Well, you are going to have to wait until 13th level to get access to your one and only attack roll spell on the Bard list.

Here is the list of spells that all Bard colleges have access to:

Mordenkainen’s Sword (7th level)

With a list of spells that short there is no reason to do a tier list. Mordenkainen’s Sword is both the best and worst spell you can choose. Seriously, Mordenkainen’s Sword is an A tier level spell and is very useful.

There is Magical Secrets which allows you to choose two spells from any list that are of a level you can cast. This does open up the list of available options. This class feature is not available until 10th level (unless you choose College of Lore which opens that up at 6th level).

Here are the spells that Magical Secrets opens up to you that have attack rolls:

1st Level

  • Chaos Bolt

  • Chromatic Orb

  • Guiding Bolt

  • Ice Knife

  • Jim’s Magic Missile

  • Ray of Sickness

  • Witch Bolt

2nd Level

  • Melf’s Acid Arrow

  • Ray of Enfeeblement

  • Scorching Ray

  • Shadow Blade

  • Spiritual Weapon

5th Level

  • Bigby’s Hand

  • Steel Wind Strike

These are the same spells that are affected by the Spell Sniper feat, and the link can take you to that article. The Spell Sniper feat is not the best option for the Bard for obvious reasons.

There you go, a quick article that took no time to write (and less time to read). So, do you care whether you make an attack roll or if the enemy gets a saving throw? Let me know in the comments below.
